Chapter 2

“Hey, you!” I stomped over to the man standing in the kitchen, looking like he owned the place, and jabbed a finger at him. “You told me you weren’t coming to the castle. You said you were running late for an appointment and couldn’t help me after my accident.”

The man towered over me, a sly smile creeping across his face. “Oh, that’s right. You’re the serving girl who was in the ditch when I drove past.”

“First off, I’m not a serving girl, I’m a baker in this kitchen, and an extremely good one. And second, I was in that ditch because I was almost run over. I was injured, and you didn’t help me. Why lie?”

He shrugged. “I didn’t want to get my car dirty with your damaged bike. I’ve just had it detailed. Plus, you had mud and blood all over your clothes. You still do. You shouldn’t be in the kitchen in that state.”

“I was injured! I don’t normally look like this.”

“And did I spot some hairy mutt with you? That thing was definitely not getting in my car.”

I glared at him. “You’re a real piece of work. Any decent person would have offered to help.”

“Maybe I’m not a decent person.”

“What are you even doing in this kitchen? You don’t work here.”

“What’s going on?” Chef Heston strode over. “Lorcan, is there a problem?”

The guy’s gaze slid my way. “There may be. Does she really work in your kitchen?”

Chef Heston glared at me before nodding. “She does. This is Holly Holmes. Why do you ask?”

“I’m not sure she’s a good influence. Perhaps she shouldn’t be around while I’m working in here.”

“You’re ... working in this kitchen?” I shook my head. “Please don’t tell me you’ve taken a job here.”

Chef Heston grabbed my arm and marched me away. “Of course he hasn’t. Don’t you know who that is?”

“He’s a selfish, rude man who didn’t help me when I fell off my bike. Or should I say, I was driven into a ditch by someone.”

Chef Heston sucked air through his teeth. “Did you damage the bike again?”

“The bike! Don’t worry about asking if I’m okay.”

His gaze ran over me. “You seem fine. Holly, that’s Lorcan Blaze.”

My head whipped round to stare at Lorcan. Of course, I recognized him now. He was the go-to guy when it came to celebrity cakes. I’d seen his picture in numerous magazines.

“What’s he doing here?” I asked.

“He’s been brought in to provide the cake for the anniversary party. We should be privileged that he’s using our kitchen.”

My gaze slid Lorcan’s way again. He was still smirking, probably thrilled that I was getting reprimanded. I didn’t feel privileged by him being here. “Lorcan should have helped me after I’d fallen off my bike.”

“I’m sure he had bigger things on his mind than helping you after your little tumble.”

“It was more than a little—”

“Enough!” Chef Heston lifted a finger. “You will get along with Lorcan while he’s working in this kitchen. It’s important the party goes without a hitch.
